MNQ Volume Jumped 78% in August 2026: What It Means for Micro Nasdaq Traders

TLDR: CME reported that Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures, MNQ, averaged about 2.4 million contracts a day in August 2026, up 78% from August 2025. That is strong evidence of participation in the micro-sized Nasdaq market. It does not mean every MNQ order will fill at the displayed price, nor does it establish that a newly launched E-nano contract, NNQ, has the same liquidity. For strategy traders, compare volume with current spread, depth, and fill quality.

MNQ's appeal is precise dollar sizing: one contract represents $2 per Nasdaq-100 index point, one-tenth the NQ multiplier. A 0.25-point tick is $0.50 per MNQ contract. UMT Automator can help test eligible TradingView-to-broker execution without maintaining a webhook server, but neither high volume nor automation guarantees a fill or profitable strategy.

What did CME actually report?

In its September 2 monthly volume release, CME said August Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 average daily volume was approximately 2.4 million contracts, a 78% increase from the same month a year earlier. Average daily volume divides the month's total contracts traded by trading days. It is not the number of open positions, not a real-time order-book depth measure, and not a promise that each overnight minute is equally active.

Why MNQ volume matters to a systematic trader

A market with substantial participation often offers more opportunities for buyers and sellers to meet. That can help a small order enter or exit, but execution cost depends on the actual bid-ask spread, visible and hidden liquidity, queue position, order type, and volatility at the moment of the trade. A bar-close backtest using one synthetic price does not reveal those details.

If a strategy targets only a few MNQ ticks, commissions and slippage can consume much of the gross move. Model all-in round-trip costs. For example, a four-tick gross target is $2 per MNQ contract before fees and slippage. That arithmetic, not the monthly volume headline, determines whether a tiny-target setup has room for costs.

MNQ versus NNQ after the E-nano launch

MNQ is one-tenth NQ's multiplier. CME's NNQ E-nano is one-tenth MNQ's multiplier. Smaller dollar exposure may help position sizing, but it also means the same commission can be a larger share of a small gross gain. Compare the two contracts' live spread, depth, volume, and fee schedule before moving a scalping strategy. UMT's E-nano explainer covers the product mechanics; the present article is about what MNQ's recent activity does and does not indicate.

Before automating MNQ

  1. Check the active contract month and roll date.
  2. Measure actual spread and fills in the hours your strategy trades.
  3. Use the chart Buy/Sell or DOM quantity that your execution workflow actually reads; UMT's setup guide specifies those controls.
  4. Paper-test entries, exits, reversals, and disconnect recovery.

FAQ

Is MNQ more liquid because August volume rose?

The monthly figure shows more overall trading, but check the live order book for your session and contract month.

Does MNQ volume prove NNQ is liquid?

No. They are separate contracts with separate books.

How much is one MNQ point?

One MNQ contract changes by $2 per index point before costs.

Risk disclaimer: Futures are leveraged. Higher volume does not eliminate slippage, gaps, or loss risk.
